Photos of Puerto Escondido Beaches
There are so many great beaches in Puerto Escondido. Most of the playas are pure white sand with a variety of wave types and conditions whether you want a leisurely swim, to SCUBA, snorkel or beaches for surfing.
You'll find the world famous Mexican Pipeline at Playa Zicatela beach. Surfers discovered this 'epic' wave back in the late 60's and early 70's when it was a 12 hour bus ride on a dirt road from Acapulco to get here. Only the die-hard's were up to the task. Now, with the International Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) there is easy access to the beach for big wave surfers from around the world. For a number of years, ESPN held their ESPN X Games surfing competion at playa Zicatela beach. Further down is La Punta which, with a protected right point break, is generally considered to be an area where beginners can get lessons and smaller waves near the beach while the expert surfers paddle out farther and catch bigger waves that begin to crest near the rocky point.
There is boat traffic to and from the hidden coves such as Playa Carrizalillo, Playas Angelito, Manzanillo beach and Bacocho. Although it may appear to be calm for recreation you should stay alert, be careful and aware. Bacocho has 2 small beach clubs which are open to the public and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Send your kids to Jon Silver's Swim & Surf Beach Camp where they will either learn to swim or improve their swimming skills in the water while participating in other sports and water activities. Jon is also an excellent surfer and instructor whether for a beginner or experienced rider who wants to improve their technique.
